A live-edge table begins long before finish touches wood. The most important choices concern moisture, movement, structure, and proportion.

Start with a stable slab

Document where the slab came from, its species, thickness, moisture readings, and drying history. A beautiful slab that is still moving can become an expensive problem.

Preserve character selectively

Natural edges, knots, checks, and color variation make each piece distinct. Not every defect should remain. Loose bark, unstable voids, and structural cracks need deliberate treatment.

Flatten without erasing the tree

Flattening establishes a reliable reference surface. The goal is not to make the slab visually sterile; it is to create a stable plane while retaining the form that made the slab worth choosing.

Build for seasonal movement

Bases and fasteners must allow the top to expand and contract across the grain. Good furniture respects that movement instead of trying to overpower it.
